"The Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club is a Greg Norman designed golf club in the western suburbs of Melbourne. It is designed around a system of lakes and weaves its way through the Sanctuary Lakes housing estate.

It is made up of 2 distinct nines with the front nine providing a simpler overall challenge. However, don't be complacent as each hole has been impeccably designed to punish bad shots. For example, the 2nd hole, is a difficult downhill par 3 of about 150 metres depending on the tee. A lake runs down the right hand side and impinges on the golfers psyche. It takes an accurate, well struck mid-iron to typically hit the green and then 2 good putts to make a challenging par.

The back nine is littered with great golf holes starting with the par 3 11th, brutal uphill par 4 13th, the short but challenging par 4 15th. All of these great golf holes before the ultimate in closing. The 16th is a long par 5 that is protected on both side by out of bounds and a lake. The lake imposes itself around the green forcing the player to make a good approach to the green. The 17th is a long and difficult par 3 that has a saddle in the middle of the green. Typically the pin is placed to punish the shot that ends up on the wrong side of the saddle. A two putt on this green is always good.

Finally, the 18th hole is the number one indexed hole and the feature golf hole on the course. It plays a hefty 413 metres of the black tees and typically plays into the prevailing wind which, being on the southern coast of Australia, is always present and always affecting the ball. The 18th plays to a substantial island green that challenges the golfer with a long iron or fairway wood approach. It requires the greatest courage and flawless execution to get to the green. Anything short or right is in the water. From the tee, to setup any chance of hitting the green in regulation, you need to avoid the water left and the out of bounds right before you are even afforded the chance of trying your luck with a difficult approach.

SLGC features wide fairways and large greens that can lull the golfer into a false sense of security. Greg Norman has designed this course beautifully, allowing the golfer to attack of the tee but creating doubt and misdirection with visual tricks. Miss the green and you are typically faced with a difficult up and down.

A great challenging golf course.
